A Baptist in a Catholic Mass

Shannon Baptism
Posted by Hello

Sounds almost like a oxy moron huh? Is that the correct word? Lol. Oh who cares. Anywho.. I went to Catholic Mass this evening. I know my Mom would be proud (her being raised Catholic). One of my best friends (and hair dresser) Shannon was baptised into the Catholic Church this evening as well. So we were there for 3 1/2 hours for the Easter Ceremony and for the Baptisms. Oh my back hurts from the pew.
The plan was for me to meet Theresa at Shannon's Salon at 5:00 pm to finish getting ready. We were both late. After much primping and
hair straightening we drove the 5 mins to Immaculate Conception (is there more to that name?) and found, for having to park on the street, a good parking place. As we crossed the road and walked up the front steps I explained to Theresa that I felt like I was committing a sin because I was wearing jeans into Church. She asks me if I am serious. I assure her I am very serious. She laughs and tells me not to worry about it.. Catholics don't care.
We cross into the threshold and before us is a pedestal with Holy Water in it. Now the running joke is I always tell Theresa and Shannon I can't go with them to Mass on Saturday because the church will burst into flames or the Holy Water will boil. As I stick my fingers into the Holy Water I say to Theresa, "Hey look.. the water isn't boiling." We get a good laugh and go in to find our seats.
As we sit there waiting on the party to start, I look around and notice a picture of the last supper painted on the wall. The only thing is.. it’s not the “panoramic” view you normally see. This is more realistic. Since this is a large Church on the inside and the picture is a fairly decent yardage away from me, I am having to really stretch to make out the picture well. What am I looking for? To see if indeed it is Mary sitting beside Jesus. Have you heard that lil tid bit? Read The Davinci Code by Dan Brown. Some interesting information in that book.
It seemed weird to sit in Church and not "feel" the Holy Spirit. When I went to the small church back home called West Park Street FWB Church you could walk in the door and feel that something was there. There was not a service went by that I didn't hate to leave. Kimber and I went every Sunday (twice) and Wednesday night. But alas, the world got into the Church and it split down the middle. We just quit going. Although I do have to say in defense of the Gentleman who is the Reverend over the Church now... He's good. I very much enjoyed his sermons.
The weirdest thing is how much my point of view and opinions have changed as I get older. I use to always think that whatever my parents told me, or the government insisted is all I could believe. Then one day I woke up (almost literally) and decided that I could form my own opinions and it was ok if they differed from what my parent's, family, friends or enemies thought. That was a life changing moment for me. It's sad to think that I was so brain washed? that I went (at this point) over half my life not realizing that most everything that I knew to be true was not. Now I have alot of questions and not alot of answers.

Char,I had no idea that you felt that way , the part about it feeling so weird to be in a church and not feel the Holy Spirit....I actually find that so hard to comprihend...Because I still cant get used to the fact that I walk into that very same church and cannot believe the power of the Holy Spirit that surrounds me.. I am sorry you dont also feel it there..I guess this is just another example of how the Lord places each and everyone of us exactly where we need to be.
